Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Technologists

Veterinary technicians and veterinary technologists provide professional support to veterinarians in veterinary clinics and hospitals, biological research settings, animal control and humane organizations, zoos, and educational facilities.

Veterinary technicians are graduates of two-or three-year veterinary technology programs.

Veterinary technologists are graduates of  four-year veterinary technology programs.

Many of these programs are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

Duties of veterinary technicians and veterinary technologists include care and handling of animals, responsibilities in medical and surgical nursing, anesthesiology, radiography and clinical laboratory procedures. All work is done under the direction of veterinarians and is carried out in compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local laws.

Veterinary technicians and veterinary technologists do not diagnose animal illness, prescribe medications or perform surgery.

The professional association for veterinary technicians and technologists in the United States is the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. in Canada, the national organization is the Canadian Association of Animal Health Technologists and Technicians.
